In December, Mr. Boyce’s fourth and fifth-grade class teamed up with Ms. Jade to tackle a composting challenge in The Living Classroom. Using the Project Based Learning model, they designed and built user-friendly compost sifters to separate finished compost from decomposing materials, benefiting their school and reducing methane emissions through anaerobic decomposition from landfills. Through their research, iterative prototyping and peer reviews, these problem solvers refined their designs to create functional and accessible sifters. Their teamwork and innovation resulted in tools that enhance the school’s garden tasks and showcase the impact of their collaborative problem-solving efforts. This project also satisfies one of several projects funded by the recently awarded Ocean Guardians School grant awarded to SCG earlier this school year.

Projects like these are the cornerstone of the SAGE Program at SCG. To learn more about another project created by Mr. Boyce’s class, check out the recently created Chaminade Trail Guide Project.
